The Laos faces an immense technical and commercial challenges in expanding telecommunications, due to the fact that the most of population resides in rural areas, transport and electrical infrastructure are scare, and income are low. Telecommunication services are being provided by Enterprise of Telecommunications Lao (ETL) of the Government of Laos and Lao Telecommunications Limited (Lao Tel). The ETL has plants to cover capitals of 13 Provinces by the year 2004 and 142 districts headquarter by the year 2005. Gsm is available in nine out of 18 provinces of the country. The Lao tel has established the backbone of 34 (1+1) Mbps microwave transmission system connecting 13 main cities to Vientiane, and also in the process of installing rural telephone in remote and rural areas in five phases, through out the country. The Lao Tel has plants to upgrade 34(1+1) Gbps of the Microwave transmission system to 34(2+1) Gbps system. Despite 8 years of mobile cellular implementation, Laos has not experienced a wireless boom to the sameextent as other developing countries have.
