] Before going into APCD's activities, APCD would like to congratulate the Disability Community for having the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2006. This was a great achievement after hard work done by persons with disabilities and other related parties.
This term, APCD has had the opportunity to learn much about deaf issues and their ongoing activities from different countries at the 18th World Federation of the Deaf Regional Secretariat in Asia-Pacific Representative Meeting. APCD now has plans to further develop APCD programs for the deaf. APCD plans to further cooperate with national organizations in target countries to help develop programs for persons with disabilities, such as APCD supported technical transfer on Independent Living in Pakistan and the Promotion of Non-handicapping Environment in Sri Lanka.
Regarding trainings, APCD organized a Refresher Training on Accessible Web-based Information Networking, inviting former participants to follow-up on information networking among the participants' organizations with APCD. Previous information exchanged served as a resource to develop new action plans for future efficient information sharing. APCD continues to support the Regional Training on Independent Living (IL) for People with Disabilities for 25 ex-trainees from Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand to further expand their knowledge in the area of IL to be incorporated with the theme "community development".
APCD is pleased that both APCD buildings accessible for persons with disabilities have been welcomed as models by various sectors, disabled peoples' organizations and academic institutions alike that have come in to study the accessibility design.
