Training and Seminar
Independent Living Training (January 27- February 1, 2003 )
Since 2001, a training program on the Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities through JICA's Community Empowerment Programme has been implemented by the Redemptorist Vocational School for the Disabled in cooperation with 3 provincial organizations of People with Disabilities in Thailand. The purpose of the program is to empower Thai citizens with disabilities in society by training local leaders of people with disabilities to achieve the concepts and skills of independent living, peer-counseling and management of independent living centers, as well as enhancing public awareness and understanding on the rights of persons with disabilities living independently in the community. This year, about three hundred people concerned with disability will participate in a I-day seminar on 27th January 2003, with 40 local Thai leaders of people with disabilities to be trained in peer-counseling for one week following the seminar.
Regional Training Course for Trainers on the Promotion of a Non-handicapping Environment for People with Disabilities (February 2 - March 11, 2003 )
The purpose of this training course is to promote equalization of opportunities for people with disabilities, particularly in the area of access promotion, in the context of the implementation of the Agenda for Action for the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons, 1993-2002. Participants will be invited from 12 countries (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam). Three training participants from each country will include a leader of a self-help organization of persons with disabilities, a government officer responsible for disability-related policies and a professional on architecture, urban planning, public transportation etc. They are expected to cooperate with each other for the promotion of a non-handicapping environment in their countries after completing this training course.
